Our time at Monkey Bay has come and gone too quickly. Our 48 hours or so have been filled with a lot of wildlife. First we about the endangered Yellow-headed Parrot, and the conservation efforts Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is doing to help protect and regrow the population. We even got to assist in installing a bird box as a potential nesting site. However, due to the rain, we moved the rest of the afternoon indoors and played a very competitive game of charades (Andrew and Crew beat out Rice & Beans).
The next day we learned and practiced our birdwatching skills. Our guides took us out to spot birds with a purpose. Using EBird and Merlin ID, two citizen science birding apps, we can help track bird distribution across habitats while being out in nature and making it a fun game. How could I forget the Coati and Gray Fox we spotted next to our dining area.
Later after lunch, we hiked from through the sanctuary seeing different habitat types and learning about the many plans and their practical uses to humans.
Lastly, we were able to make it over to the Belize Zoo. We got to see some of our new favorite animals up close. We then each presented some interesting facts about each of those animals to our group. We learned a lot about birds and wildlife here, but now on to our next stop, Tobacco Caye, to learn about reefs and marine conservation.
